Celebrating 100 years of CFUW

The 100th Anniversary was celebrated in Winnipeg at the National AGM Aug. 15 – 17, 2019.  This was hosted by  the University Women’s Clubs of Winnipeg and Portage la Prairie in the same location, the historic Fort Garry Hotel, where representatives from six clubs: Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg, Regina, Edmonton and Victoria, as well as McGill Alumni delegates, met in 1919 and organized the Canadian Federation of University Women.

Guest speakers included Green Party Leader Elizabeth May and Senator Marylou McPhedran, both exceptional leaders, human rights advocates and role models for women. CFUW’s rich contribution to women’s rights in Canada and beyond over the span of 100 years was celebrated. Below are some highlights.

Did you know?
Laura Sabia, CFUW President 1964 – 1967, was instrumental, with then Cabinet Minister Judy LaMarsh in the formation of the Committee for the Equality of Women in Canada. Together, with the support of many women’s organizations, they spearheaded the Royal Commission on the Status of Women. The Committee became the National Action Committee on the Status of Women (NAC) in 1972.
